I'm still up in the air about the new slew of tablet computer coming out. Anyhow, I've seen some new colors coming in for metal locus, and I am so excited to see the project coming together so well. I am always amazed at what colors bring to the page. I've attached a sample, not the actual dialogue , fyi.

long time no update - sorry everyone - My son Larry Eugene Watts III, or lew for short, was born on July 5th- and it's been awesome! I've been drawing a lot as well, and have a lot of cool stuff coming out - Most recently, I had a pinup in the sold out The Pound- Horror Business TPB through IDW/Frozen Beach/Desperado. Metal Locus is on track for a 2012 release, and I've been making tons of t shirt designs for ASAP Screenprinting. Pictured above is my son wearing his first halloween costume- he is only 4 months old in this pic, but he is HUGE.

quick crop of a screen grab- i've been inking and trying out different textures and brushes in photoshop- have to be careful - I have a tendency to mess around with that kind of stuff for too long instead of focusing on the whole piece. hazards of working digitally.

been working hard on metal locus - i did however get a chance to do some sketching this weekend while waiting in line @ AT&T - you know how long it takes at a phone store- anyhow I liked this sketch enough I think i'm going to finish it in photoshop. I'll post updates throughout the process... I've always thought jean from x-men was a cool character -much more interesting as pheonix tho.

thought I would post some preview art for Metal Locus - Charlie is pretty much a big bad ass mofo. The colors by Romulo Fajardo really are great to me... it's a bit new to me to have someone color my work, other than myself, so it's been interesting to see how the black and white art gets treated by others. I enjoyed this process a lot, when I received the color proofs back from Rom, it was like looking at completely new pages... a nice contrast to my black and white finished pages. For me, when I look at the only inked pages, I see every brush stroke and have a hard time separating myself from the process. Looking at someone else coloring my work gives me enough distance to gain a different type of perspective on the whole creating comics thing... for example- I see areas I need to improve in, and conversely- I see certain elements that may have been unnecessary in the line work...

I really need to update my blog more.

MEGACON 2011 recap

I had an awesome time- It was nice seeing familiar faces and catching up with olf friends. Also was nice meeting all the cool people that stopped by the table this weekend. Pictured above, is a wonder woman commission i did during the con -

I was very very fortunate that Egg Embry was kind enough to give me space at his table in artist alley, as I was originally supposed to be at a publisher's booth that overbooked my space with a few other artists. I won't go into detail about the debacle.

I got to catch up with good old Wilfredo Torres and Egg Embry, as well as the ever talented Zach Basset, the encouragable James Whynot, the peculiar Patrick Sessoms, Mighty Mikey Alexanderopolous, Mike Perkins, Terry Cronin... I could go on and on... maybe later....

It was especially nice, cause since I've been working on comics mostly at night, my social life has really taken a back seat - It was a nice reminder of the people in my life, and a great chance to take a step back and see how things have changed since my first con back in 09. I had stumbled upon my first portfolio ever packing for the trip... and looking back at how my art has changed over the last two years, I'm pleased with the progress I've made. On another note, it really is amazing to see other people's work as well, and have the oppurtunity to see them grow over the years as well.

metal locus crop - some ramblings about letterers.

so i'm still working on breakdowns for the next issue of metal locus - and I doubt anyone wants to see my scribbles... so i thought I'd crop a bit of a panel from issue 1 - once again - i have to say, romulo makes my work look better than I could have imagined... I am really looking forward to seeing this project once it's made it's way through everyone's hands. Charles Pritchett, is a great letterer, and I'm pretty sure he will be putting the finishing touches on this book. I think most people would be most familiar with Charle's work on Dynamo 5. Comic books are crazy, particularly because of the collaborative nature, and the finished product (to me ) is always more than the sum of the parts.

On a side note, I think letterers are completely undervalued. Bad letters can ruin an otherwise good comic book. I've been told that great letterers go unnoticed because they keep you immersed in the story... anyhow, I guess I'm lucky cause I've had mostly good experiences with letterers... Jim Campbell comes to mind... I'm not trying to name drop here, I just think, the 5 of you that read my blog should also check out what these unsung heroes are laboring over... and THEN send them millions... and then maybe they might send me an andrew jackson...

However, the one bad letterer story I do have goes as this : One of the first books I was published in, misspelled my name in the only two places it appeared? However, is that an editorial issue or just a common mistake... i dunno. larry wats signing out. wats. like tatts. nope. no good. talk about a let down - I even had to special order the book to see a printed copy of it... sigh.

yep. I'm having a lot of fun on this book - I've been using the pen tool a lot in Photoshop - a tool I generally reserved for Illustrator work, and felt was superfluous in Photoshop while graphic designing... I find it very useful for long sweeping lines that should be continuous and smooth - I mostly use it for my contour lines. Pictured above are some pages from Metal Locus.

Pictured above is a screenshot of my photoshop document window. I would consider these my "pencils" - I've been working on this book completely digital, either on my modbook or cintiq. I've been approaching the same way I would a traditional page... i pencil things out using a 3-5 pixel brush set @ around 40% opacity - keep working it up until I like where things are going.
Eventually I'll save a jpg and send it over to my editor - if things look good, I'll get the OK to "ink" them - Pictured below is a crop of one of the pages I'm currently building up "ink" wise.

When I was drawing westerns, I would grumble about the horses... All the horses... Now that I'm working on Metal Locus... I have had to do a ton of motorcycles. Things like motorcycles, cars and guns slow me down a bit cause of they must be consistent- all those sharp and straight lines, mechanical parts, their construction, etc... for me organic shapes and objects are easier for me to envision... err... except for horses...

I suppose thats why they say it's important to draw EVERYTHING and then when you're done, do it again. Cause eventually... sooner than later... you'll probably come across it in a script. I, unfortunately, haven't drawn everything there is. I do however have google images and a friend with a neat motorcycle.

I'm doing some digital inking today. This is one of my favorite panels from page 16 - I'm not quite done with it, but I wanted to post something, illuminate the process a little bit. One of the things I really love about working on a cintiq is having your original pencils available on a seperate layer... and being able to undo... but there are times when you can just undo and undo all night -

i did this sketch yesterday while having a mental block on a page for Metal Locus... i dunno. while i feel the figure is pretty generic, and a bit redundant in regards to some old sketches- I do like the colors and style. It's reminiscent of some of my older work that predates most of my comic efforts. I think I like my old coloring sensabilities and need to do more figure sketches and spend more time in junk yards...I wonder what a book with sort of washy watercolor type coloring mixed with comic art would look like... I'm sure there's a ton out there...

so... it's been a while since I updated my blog.
I've been through two close friends passing away, and a car accident recently. It took me a little time to get back into the swing of things... I had a hard time drawing for a few weeks because of minor injuries. I was also superbummed. I wanted to say thank you to everyone who has been supportive during the last month or so, and I can't wait to get back working steady again.

On to more positive matters.

Just got back from Supercon in Miami. I had a wonderful time. I was in attendance at both the What the Flux Booth and the Frozen Beach studios Booth. I got the hang out with Jeramy Hobs(wtfc), Larry Jarrell(wtfc), and Stephan Nilson (FBS) for most of the weekend. These guys are all super talented and just overall great people, you know that Queen song "keep good company"? thats what we do.

I finally met Aris, from millarworld's boards. I used to post there pretty regularly, and he has always been supportive and a good honest source for critique, so meeting him in person was awesome.

Got a copy of Assassin's Guild #4
- Written by Randy Taylor, pencils by Dustin Weaver & Larry Jarrell, inks by Joe Fauvel & Zach Basset. The guys needed a quick lettering job- so I turned those around for them. I also printed up some shirts for their long awaited finale.

Just finished a 5 pager for an anthology. Some Action Figure designs for Frozen Beach Studios,
as well as a 3 page story for their title " Metal Locus".

Printed Extinction shirts printed up for the release of the "Extinction" TPB - written by Stephan Nilson art by Kyle Stokes- who by the way is an ultra chill dude and fun to hang out with.

I attended a few portfolio reviews as well. One of which was a personal victory was
finally getting a favorable and positive review as well as follow up info from a company that pretty much told me to get bent a few years ago. Bo Hampton did a group review as well during the con, which I attended, he was incredibly insightful, and it was great to see what everyone else has brewing up in their portfolios, I predict great things coming out of florida very soon.

I ran into Bo later at the hotel bar and he introduced me to a few people, it was a great evening listening to the pros share stories from their careers. I also ran into Derek Donovan, he was supercool and a blast to hang out with.

So yeah! A lot of bad stuff, followed up with a great weekend. I'll be heading off to SDCC in a few weeks with Frozen Beach Studios, let's hope the good energy is still flowing

Above you will find some concept sketches. While working on other projects, I've been cooking up this book for a some time - tentatively titled "The End" - If you've been following my blog, you might have seen some early sketches and doodles which have, at this point, taken on a life of their own in my head. I'm pretty horrible with words, but I'd say if the wizard of oz, silent hill, budhism, lost, and string theory had a baby, this book would be it. I have been joined by a number of friends and creators to help make sense of the tapestry of ideas, images and themes I would like to see in this book . We've been tossing plot ideas, sketches, and different sources of inspiration around these last few months. Everyone has other projects on their plate, so this book will probably be a long time in the works, but so far, I am very excited about the progress we have made thus far. I love drawing, but this part of the comics process, the part where new ideas are born and tossed back and forth, and evolve - is probably my favorite part. It reminds me of playing music - or a great conversation.

Red Plains, on the other hand, is a comic for grownups. It’s a western, something I don't see a lot of, and the first story arc is about ranchers vs. settlers, a classic theme. I really enjoy Noel Tuazon’s loose, brushy inking style in the first arc, Range War, and I like Larry Watts’s tighter work in the later arcs as well. I’m still getting a feel for the story, and Tuazon’s art is so loose that it’s hard to tell the characters apart, but Caryn Tate’s solid, spare writing is keeping me hooked.

They'll be launching Cancertown, and this will be the first chance to get your hands on Layer Zero : Choices, which includes a short storie by yours truly and and Alexi Conman. I was checking out websites of creators I met @ Megacon and was delighted to find a mention of me on Egg Embry's* Comics by Egg dot com. yay! check it out.

One of the more fun moments this last weekend (besides Humberto Ramos busting out into song during the already hilarious Marvel Panel) was talking to Wilfredo Torres and Egg Embry. Both were supercool, funny, down to earth guys who love comics. If you get a chance, check out Comicsbyegg and SALEM on Boom Studios, it's a great read.

MEGACON 09: There was a ton of stuff to check out today. Awesome Panels by some of my favorite creators, kids in costumes, and tons of comics, anime, toys and robots. I got to meet and pick the brains of a lot of people, including Mark Waid, Tim Townsend, Steve Mcniven, Jimmy Cheung, Frank Cho, Wilfredo Torres, Dan DiDio, Barabara Kessel and more. I spent most of the day with editors and artists having my portfolio assessed... made some solid contacts & got some great pointers! Overall... Awesome awesome day. Everyone here was so nice and open to talk about their experience in the industry, their tools of trade and what they've got goin on in the future.

Funny thing is, Kanilla Tripp posted a daredevil illustration a few days ago on Millarworld as I was scannin the smaller thumb for this... coincidence, or some strange cosmic force... who knows.

I'm excited to be working on the next story arc for Caryn A. Tate's "Red Plains" on Top Shelf 2.0. I've been watching westerns, and looking at a lot of old drawings and photos. Caryn's a talented writer with a great pacing and narrative, and the red plains is a great little universe to visit.

i did these sequentials over x mas break for Sarah Horrocks from Millarworld.tv ... will do colors soon. I've been trying to stick to my guns and finish every project that comes my way, no excuses... it feels great to finish a page... feels even better to finish a whole script someone sends you. Once again, I'm not sure why, but you have to click on the image to see the whole page.

so i think this guy is a higher up baddy... maybe not the top baddie, but pretty close, and his agenda is the source of most of the conflict and negative forces during the current story arc.

These are some sketches for the lead character in my untitled project. I would like her to have enhanced speed and agility, perhaps due to articles of clothing... but other wise a headstrong and normal person caught up in circumstances beyond her control.

I came up with this design in the car while my wife and I were driving to my father's house. (first drawing) These characters will be kind of like spirit guides... they fly... from below they will look like birds. Their helmets are also their weapon... have not decided if they need additional weapons. There will be babies that are posessed by negative forces (first sketch)... and mangled corpses that are very unhappy in this world.

I just opened my mail and Michael S. Bracco's "Novo" volume 2. "The Pride" was neatly packaged and waiting for me! A while back Micheal was kind enough to offer me a shot at a pin-up for this volume. :) Novo is a tremendously unique book, and I'm excited to crack this book open and give it a read.

This is the first time I've seen something (comic related) of mine in actual published form. I'm very pleased and thankful!

im working on a spawn piece for the SPAWN:endgame art contest. I didn't find out about the contest until recently, so I'm just running with this sketch I have. Once again, I penciled with a wacom tablet, and hand inked to finish it up. I'm going to take this into painter and photoshop later and add the final details.

I was toying around with a comic called "Tacman" with my friends. My wife actually came up with the idea... anyhow... we all work in a screenprinting shop, it would be about a screenprinter who gets these crazy powers after their shop blows up... but the story just kind of fizzled out, so heres some of the pages I was working on for practice.
